YTD view: The YTD bars cover only the monthly biomass-register series — i.e. smolts under 500 grams released in Jan through the latest reported month, year-by-year. The >500g post-smolt cap shown in the Annual view is sourced from statistikkbanken's revised annual tables and is not available at monthly resolution, so it cannot be included in a like-for-like YTD comparison. YTD figures will therefore read lower than the revised annual totals.

Note on December 2022: The December 2022 figure of 80.1 million is a reporting artifact rather than a real spike in smolt releases. Ahead of the introduction of Norway's salmon resource rent tax (grunnrenteskatt), many farming companies restructured their operations — transferring fish and licences from existing entities to newly established ones. Because releases are reported per legal entity, fish that had already been released earlier in 2022 were filed a second time under the new owners. The underlying trend-implied value for December 2022 is approximately 31 million smolts.
